Attempting to recover James Bond's winnings from the Casino, Gettler and his men meet with Vesper Lynd in Venice. Vesper had a French-Algerian boyfriend who was kidnapped by Quantum to blackmail her into co-operation, and she agreed to deliver the money in exchange for saving Bond's life.
After Bond learns that his winnings were never deposited in the Treasury's account, he pursues Vesper and Gettler into a building under renovation, which is being kept from sinking only by inflatable supports. A gunfight ensues and the supports are punctured, causing the building to become unstable. Bond proceeds up the building killing Gettler's men in an attempt to rescue Vesper. As Gettler runs towards Bond, the spy lifts a nearby nail-gun and shoots Gettler in the left eye.
