The Phoenix Laser Rifle, alternately named Phoenix samurai laser rifle[1] and the Phoenix International experimental laser rifle[2], is a fictional directed-energy weapon developed by Phoenix International for the purpose of zero-gravity warfare. The weapon appeared in Electronic Arts' 2002 James Bond video game, Nightfire.

Appearances[]

In a bid to hijack the orbiting U.S. Space Defense Platform, wealthy industrialist, Rafael Drake, illegally ordered the development of a weapon that could be effortlessly handled in low-gravity and outer-space environments, particularly in order to arm his secret Phoenix astronaut trainees. With MI6 closing in on his criminal operation, Drake led a team of astronauts to capture the platform, using the rifles to kill its attendants. MI6 agent, James Bond, pursued the team to the platform and was able to eliminate them before they activated its nuclear arsenal.

The physical appearance of the Phoenix laser rifle varied greatly between the various versions of the game. The Console variant was bulky and industrial; with a bare metal frame, in which a glowing blue energy core spun. The PC variant more closely resembled the Moonraker laser rifle, with a sleek, futuristic black and white body. Functionally, both versions of the weapon were semi-automatic and had unlimited ammunition, although they had to cool off (in the case of the Console variant) or recharge (on the PC version) after being shot too many times; automatically replenishing after a few seconds. Both could fire "charged" shots which caused greater damage, but significantly filled / depleted the bar.
