Hannes Oberhauser was a fictional Austrian climbing and skiing instructor. He is the father of Franz Oberhauser and foster-father of James Bond. The character made a posthumous appearance in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre and was loosely based on a character of the same name from the Ian Fleming short-story Octopussy.

Biography[]

Oberhauser taught climbing and skiing in Kitzbühel before taking temporary custody of the young orphan, James Bond, following the death of his parents in a climbing accident. Oberhauser's own son, Franz, grew jealous of his father's strong paternal relationship with Bond; an obsession which eventually culminated in the young man murdering Hannes in a staged avalanche. The avalanche, noted by an unnamed newspaper as "the worst recorded in the Kitzbühel Alps for several years,"[3] closed down the busy ski resort for 24 hours, preventing rescuers from mounting a search until first light the following day, and providing Franz with the means to stage his own death, escaping the scene of the crime.
