He was the Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiral in the Royal Navy during the years of 1939-1942. Before that, he was promoted to Captain in 1923. Fleming served under him during the years with Naval Intelligence. Eventually, Godfrey would be the inspiration for M, in the James Bond Novels.
