The flag of Italy

The Republic of Italy (Italian: Repubblica Italiana) or Italy is a republic in southern Europe on the Apennine peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea and nearby islands. The area of Italy is about 300,000 square kilometers and the population is about 59.2 million. The capital of Italy is Rome, with other historically or currently significant cities being Milan, Turin, Naples, Florence and Venice.

Italy's neighboring countries are France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The dwarf states of San Marino and the Vatican are surrounded by Italian territory, while the Italian exclave, Campione d'Italia, is surrounded by Swiss territory.

The current area of Italy was once the core area of the Roman Empire. After the collapse of the empire in 476, the region was divided into numerous small principalities. The Italian state was founded in 1861. In the 1920s, the rise of fascism led to a totalitarian dictatorship, which was abolished in 1943. In June 1946, a republic was formed in Italy, and in December 1947, a republican constitution was adopted, which came into force on January 1, 1948.

Italy is featured in From Russia with Love, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Spectre and No Time to Die.
