- "Welcome! (laughter) Welcome to Japan, Mister Bond!"
- ― Tiger Tanaka greeting James Bond
Japan (Japanese: 日本, Nihon or Nippon, officially 日本国, Nihon koku or Nippon koku) is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean in East Asia. It is located to the east of China, the Korean Peninsula and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The characters that make up the country's name mean "root of the sun" or "source of the sun", which is why Japan is sometimes called the "Land of the Rising Sun". The capital and largest population center of Japan is Tokyo.
It is one of the more frequently appearing countries in James Bond universe. Bond has visited Japan in You Only Live Twice, (both the novel and film), The Man with the Red Tattoo, James Bond 007: NightFire, Spectre and No Time to Die. Also possibly in movie Diamonds Are Forever, when Bond returns there in his hunt for Blofeld at the start of the film.
