Joe was a helicopter pilot employed by "Harry's Heli-Service". He was also a diamond smuggler working indirectly for the criminal organisation, SPECTRE. Portrayed by actor Ray Baker, the character served as a minor antagonist in the 1971 James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever.
Biography[]
Joe was a pilot who flew a Hughes 500 for "Harry's Heli-Service", operating out of Paarl in South Africa. He secretly functioned as a smuggler - transporting diamonds from his mining contact, Dr. Tynan, to elderly school teacher, Mrs. Whistler. Unbeknownst to the smugglers, the gemstones were being used to construct an orbital laser weapon; commissioned by criminal mastermind, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. With construction nearing completion, Blofeld dispatched assassins Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd to tie-up loose ends by murdering the pipeline's members. Joe was the second to be targeted by the pair, who posed as replacement contacts for the "ill" Tynan who had recently been "bitten by the bug". They exchanged a box, supposedly containing diamonds, but actually a bomb. It detonated several seconds after departing; destroying the aircraft and killing its pilot.
