The Karl Marx is a fictional oil tanker mentioned briefly in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. In the film it is noted that the ship was the largest tanker in the world circa 1977; the second largest tanker was Karl Stromberg's Liparus at over 1,000,000 tons.
Behind the scenes
In reality, the Seawise Giant (launched in 1979) was the longest ship ever constructed, longer than the height of many of the world's tallest buildings. Despite her great length, Seawise Giant was not the largest ship by gross tonnage, ranking fifth at 260,941 GT, behind the four 274,838 to 275,276 GT Batillus-class supertankers. She is the longest and largest by deadweight: 564,763 metric tons. Batillus-class ships and Seawise Giant were the largest self-propelled objects ever constructed.
