Raoul Silva's private island.
Raoul Silva's Island is a location which appears in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall. The abandoned island, located somewhere off the coast of Macau, is Raoul Silva's base of operations.
Film appearance
After convincing Raoul Silva's representative Sévérine to arrange a meeting with the mastermind, James Bond sails with her to an abandoned island off the coast of Macau. Upon arriving they are taken prisoner by the crew and delivered to Silva. Silva kills Sévérine, but Bond overpowers his guards and captures Silva for removal to Great Britain.
Behind the scenes
Raoul Silva's island is based on Hashima Island (端島 or Hashima), commonly called Gunkanjima (軍艦島; meaning Battleship Island); a former coal mining facility and one among 505 uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Nagasaki, Japan.
However, filming did not take place on the island itself due to safety concerns. One section was recreated at Pinewood Studios in Great Britain and the rest via CGI.[1][2] Production chose to include the Hashima model after Daniel Craig met with Swedish film-maker Thomas Nordanstad whilst shooting the 2011 film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in Stockholm. Nordanstad, who produced a short documentary on Hashima Island in 2002 entitled Hashima, recalled Craig taking extensive notes on the island at the time of the meeting, but was unaware of his interest in it until Skyfall was released.[3]
