Unnamed, the character was a fictional British agent employed by the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS/MI6). A minor ally, his likeness appeared briefly in the 1999 James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough. The character's back story was expanded upon in its accompanying novelisation and video game adaptation, where he was identified as 0012 of the Double-O Section, an ultra-covert unit within the SIS.
Biography[]
Circa 1999[1], presumably while operating in Russia, the unnamed SIS intelligence operative came into possession of a classified report belonging to the Russian Atomic Energy Department. He was subsequently killed for the document by the terrorist, Renard. The document would later be used as bait in the murder of oil tycoon, Sir Robert King. The operative's colleague, James Bond, would later unsuccessfully attempt to extract the identity of his murderer from a Swiss banker named Lachaise. Before Lachaise can reveal the assassin's name he is stabbed by his female assistant.
Alternate continuities[]
In Raymond Benson's novelization of The World Is Not Enough, the character was identified as 0012 of the 'Double-O' ('00') branch.[2] 0012 had been a recent recruit to SIS, and Bond had barely known him. He had been one of the few '00' agents who were permanently stationed abroad and had stolen the classified report from a Russian operative.[2] A month prior to the novel's events, and two weeks after taking the document, 0012 was found shot dead in SIS's Russian station in Omsk. The office had been ransacked and all classified material taken.[2] The PlayStation variant of the film's video-game also mentions the agent's '00' status, albeit without providing a number.[3]

- While not specifically addressed in the film, its novelization and games provide differing reasons for why 007 interrogates Lachaise on the identity of the agent's killer. In the novel, Bond is sent as an "errand boy" to return the money and he is specifically warned not to entertain notions of a vendetta.[2] When he does grill Lachaise, it is on his own volition. The games' M, on the other hand, explicitly allocates Bond the task of identifying the agent's killer.
